Anyone looking for proof that any sort of technological innovation is usually met with fear and skepticism will enjoy the following post.  The poster below, “borrowed” from the national archives, or ARC, website, shows an outrageous scene with a menacing locomotive plowing its way through town.  Of particular note is the way the “face” of the engine train is made to look as though it is scowling - seemingly enjoying decimating the guy on the horse and carriage, who was apparently smacked by the dreadful Locomotive’s cow catcher. Ahh… That time of year again…  For the past 15 or so odd years my family has been taking a trek to the Outer Banks of North Carolina to spend a week killing coolers of beers, devouring plates of fried tomatoes and corn fritters, getting kite strings tangled, capsizing on kayaks, spying on neighboring families with binoculars, and burning one another with sparklers.  This is that fateful time of year when my family holds meetings to discuss the merits of bringing one car or another, whether to buy 10 or 20 pounds of tomatoes, and performing a cost risk analysis on the merits of leaving at 4 am vs. 5 am.
