Support Hallmark

It appears that the American Family Association has just caught wind of the fact that Hallmark offers greeting cards geared toward people in same sex partnerships.  Being that the AFA is actually a religious fundamentalist group operating under the guise of being concerned with American family values, they have taken it upon themselves to encourage their ignorant supporters to send hate-mail to Hallmark because of the fact that they stock cards friendly to people celebrating same sex marriages.  As I see it, there are a couple of things we can do in this situation – feel free to pick and choose, or complete them all.

  1. Visit the following site – AFA Hallmark ‘Hate Mail’ – and send Hallmark an email letting them know how much you support their decision to offer same-sex greeting cards.  This is the one I used:
I am very pleased that Hallmark is actively promoting tolerance of a lifestyle. I appreciate the progressive attitude Hallmark has taken towards including same sex marriage cards in its product lineup.  Your acceptance and tolerance has not been overlooked, and I would like to thank your company for making an effort to include all Americans despite differing race, creed, and sexual orientation.
  2. We could each purchase a same sex greeting card, and mail it to the AFA to congratulate them on their unsuccessful campaign of fear mongering and gay bashing.  Here is their address:
    American Family Association
    P O Drawer 2440
    Tupelo, MS 38803
  3. Post your own link encouraging people to send their well-wishes to Hallmark:)
  4. Send out an email letting everyone know how they can show their support for Hallmark’s stance regarding same sex partnerships, and encourage them to give Hallmark their business.

It has occurred to me while writing this that Hallmark may just be offering these cards as a way to increase their revenue, and they may not really care as deeply about supporting gay unions as I hope they do.  After all, they are a business…  But, so what?!  They could just as easily have chosen to alienate people interested in these cards, in a similar fashion as their competitors, as a way to avoid controversies like the one that has come up with the AFA.  Does it really matter if their original intention behind offering this line of cards was to make extra profit?  What company would not capitalize on an opportunity to offer a card line geared toward a lifestyle moving more into the mainstream of America?  I think that just further shows the ingenuity of this company.
