Rehomeing Chiwawa

I have done rants about spelling in the past, but this one really gets to me. Maybe I am biased by the fact that if I see a word once I will remember the pattern for its spelling, or maybe it was those two semesters of college Spanish that give me a different perspective on the proper structure for words of Spanish descent. What ever the case may be, I find it completely unacceptable that someone would dare post a phrase as grammatically appalling as “Rehomeing Chiwawa” in a public domain for people to read. If you are going to be selling something on the internet, especially a living, breathing creature, you should perhaps take the extra 30 seconds to double check the spelling before the ad is placed, not to mention revisit your 2nd grade English lesson where we learned that the ‘e’ is dropped when making a word into ‘ing’.

Not only does this carelessly phonetic spelling of the dog breed make it impossible for a potential buyer to find your dog via a search for a chihuahua, it also tends to reflect badly on you as the seller. I can not imagine that people would be breaking your door down to adopt a dog (no matter how good the sob story is) being raised by someone that does not even know or take the time to learn the proper spelling of its name. I know this might be taking it too far, but personally I would automatically assume that this person is either lazy or careless, and if they are that way about finding the dog a good home, the dog has probably not had the most peachy keen life up to this point, which could translate into any number of behavioral or psychological deficits. So buyer beware, enjoy the following ridiculous ads sampled from Craigslists across the nation:

Uhhh…did you mean “descent” instead of decent? And per se instead of per say?

Here’s a few of my current favorite misspellings from nursing students:
paralistis for paralysis and assed for assessed. Yes, that’s right…assed.

Now when I lecture, I warn them when I am about to use “big words”.

I can’t wait for them to take care of me when I’m 90.

I had just as much fun with the commentators as I did reading the posts themselves. Most people apparently don’t care enough to spell their own written works correctly. That and/or they’re truly horrible spellers and composers. It does happen to me, sometimes. Just not as bad. Funny thing is I have a Daschund/Chihuahua a.k.a. “Chiweenie”.
