Kill Your TV

As most of you already know, before we moved to the new house, we did not have television for roughly a year or so. At first this was very disturbing to me, as I was still in the mindset of return from work, make dinner, become a zombie in front of the boob tube until bed, only to wake up and do it all over again. The only way to free myself from the media box’s evil clutches was to completely detach myself and find other, more constructive means, of spending time; leading to the birth of this blog you all adore so much:) It has been a hard road, this is the first year I did not see a single episode of American Idol, and I am now officially 1 season behind in House, but I have never been happier.

Make a Fish Tank from Your TV

I have found alternative sources for news and, as a result, have become a much more informed and productive member of society, able to form my own thoughts, opinions, and ideas. Excuse me while I step down from my soap box… Ok, let’s be honest, TV itself is not the source of all evil, but I would venture to say that the people controlling TV are presently being charred by the firey depths from down under (no, not Australia). As a self-proclaimed, recovered TV-addict, I now feel I should share with you the way in which I fill my need for debauchery, cooking programs, reality TV, and medical shows, without feeding into the money-grubbing, mind alteringly satanic side of TV.

I do allow myself to watch TV now, about 3-4 hours per week - which roughly translates into 5 or so hour-long shows using the method I currently employ - only I do not sit in front of the actual cable television, digesting all the uselessly mind-numbing commercials and heavily biased nightly news clips. I watch my shows, which are carefully selected and planned as to not waste too much time, on the internet - for FREE, without interruptions.

Some of you may say, “now Startup Fiance, I do not want to be part of your law-breaking ways. I have heard about all of the kids that have gotten busted for downloading mp3’s, and we have all seen those trailers at the beginning of movies comparing watching a movie without buying or renting it to taking off in a stolen car.” Believe what you will, but I can guarantee no one is going to come knocking down your door or dragging you to court for watching last week’s episode of Top Chef. So for those of you interested, I have come across, what I consider to be, the pinnacle of free internet television and movies - OVGuide.com

I stumbled upon OV Guide through Bzz Agent, a program through which I create buzz for different products and services. I just felt that this find fit well with the blog, and I hope it will help to convince some of you to get rid of your cable television bill - who wants to pay that anyway with the cost of gas what it is now?! Let me know what you think about the site. I challenge you to try to find a show that OVGuide is not able to locate any episodes for, because I am pretty confident that this is one of the most extensive resources on the web for online video sites, plus it is human-edited, making the sites it does find generally of high quality and relevance.

If anyone is interested in learning more about becoming a Bzz Agent, let me know and I can email you an invite!

I canceled my cable back in the fall. I was spending $80 a month and watching at the most 2 hours of TV a week.

I definitely have plenty to watch now with netflix and online tv. I got a pretty sweet set up. My laptop is in a docking station right in front of me and I have my TV hooked up through DVI. So I can surf the internet and watch TV. Good enough for me for free! Just takes a little more effort to watch/find a show, especially not recent episodes.

I’m just waiting for all of these online sites to start charging…

kill my TV? TV is KING!
I wish I was the man in the soundproof booth
I wish I had a chance to stump the band
or maybe tell truth
and maybe I could win a color television…
I really love my–television
I love to sit by–television
Can’t live without my–television
I can’t turn off my–television
Don’t really know why–television
I understand my–television
You got your works in a drawer and your color’s on track
You have to break away but you always come back
You make a hundred changes but you’re always the same
You make me so excited and you make me so lame
You’re just a tube full of gas and a box full of tin
But you show me your charms and I want to jump in
Oh if only your chassis was covered with skin
‘Cause TV you’re my everything
I really love my–television
I love to sit by–television
Can’t live without my–television
I can’t turn off my–television
Don’t really know why–television
I understand my–television
I really love my–television
TV is king
You’re my everything
TV is king

gotta love the tubes.
classic Remote Control
a whole album dedicated to the magical box…

no tv for me either… I am a big reader (books and newspapers)

the only thing I watch is Lost (online on abc’s website a day after the regular television episode airs, not bad)…

and I have netflix…. 14.83 a month for 2 movies at a time, unlimited amount of movies during a one-month span… so if you watch them the day you get them and send them right back you can get a pretty decent amount in a month. :}

I shall check out this OVGuide. Thanks for the tip!

Wowowowow, talk about synchronicity! Just yesterday, I was shocked to realize I’d paid as much for cable stuff last year as I spent on car care. When I dug further, it turned out the only part of cable service I really liked was cable Internet. When I first got on my current cable treadmill, they sold a bundled package which turned out to cost $X, a slight savings from buying individual chunks. So I got things I didn’t really want in order to make cable Internet cheaper.

It’s been a few years. I checked. It turns out cable in my area has been losing market share to satellite TV for good reason. If I’m willing to have a wire forest, I can get MORE flexibility and keep both cable ISP and regular satellite offerings (at a large discount) or I can dump mainstream TV altogether and go with just cable Internet for 1/3 my current monthly expense.

If OVGuide works as ya say, I owe you major cream puffs and strawberry milk shakes at our next CarboFest!
