Break Fast

Not sure if anyone caught it, but I had a post up for a few hours yesterday describing my many reasons for undertaking a fast, and what I hoped to learn from pushing my body beyond its normal limits of food consumption. Well, as it usually does, life got in the way yesterday and Butterfinger and I had to break the fast just shy of the 24 hour mark. Butterfinger’s computer got sick and I was unable to compose even the most simple sentences, so instead of wasting another whole day cruising around on Reddit or Craigslist, we decided to nourish ourselves.

Despite only making it 24 hours on water alone (about 8 of those hours spent sleeping/reading in bed), I had a new-found thankfulness for the meal I ate last night to break the fast. Never before had I looked at food the way I did last evening, instead of being composed of various sugars, starches and flavorings to satisfy my caloric requirements, the plate before me seemed to actually contain a gift from the earth. Now maybe this was due to my dimmed vision, hypoglycemia or mental state bordering on some sort of psychedelic state (since I have never gone more than 8-10 hours without food to this point), but this food was amazing. I am now starting to understand how our ancestors may have felt about food, and why it was such an integral part in our rituals and ceremonies.

Am I going to stop eating Jack in the Box or burritos? Probably not, but I am really going to make an effort to limit these nasty items to a few times a month, instead of a few times per day. There really is no need to ingest overly processed foods when the earth does a pretty decent job of providing us with natural foods, and despite the higher prices for these types of foods, the physical payoff is worth the minor monetary inconvenience. That said I am off to eat a burrito, just kidding, I think I will go for a lettuce wrap:)
