As I mentioned in my first post, Butterfinger and I have roommates, and right now we have three bodies occupying rooms, in addition to ourselves. Up until about two days ago I had mistakenly assumed it to be common knowledge and practice for a person, not living with their parents or another gracious family member, to offer money in exchange for 4 walls and a roof over their head. In addition to this money offered for shelter, I had also crazily taken for granted the notion that money is exchanged for the use of utilities such as water, electric, and internet.
Apparently, I must have really been sleeping REALLY soundly the night this happened, Butterfinger and I have miraculously given birth to three adult men, all of whom are older than their mother. Imagine my surprise when I realized that, not only do I have three adult children, but I also have to find a way for us to pay the $4100 mortgage plus utilities. Somehow we did it last month and this month we are relying on selling my car, my beetle that drove my mom and I cross-country, my very first car:( But I digress…
I will try harder to practice Butterfinger’s “take care of people and they will take care of you” philosophy, because I do believe in its merit, but taking care of each other is a two way street. You can break your back pushing someone to the top of a mountain, but it’s no guarantee they will pull you up once they reach its apex. For today I will accept the fact that we have received about 1/8 of the rent money we were due from our three roommates for the past two months. Fortunately, I know that when I look back 20 years from now, I will remember my one roommate that genuinely appreciated us and what we did for him.
don’t forget: paper towels, napkins, toilet paper, tissues, condiments; i.e. ketchup, salt, sriracha!, dog food, dog medicine, trips to the vet, replacing charred pots and pans, co-sponsoring barbecues and thanksgiving! among a myriad of other community pleasantries. thank you.
you’re a good writer.
Certainly hope that in 20 years from now the “moocher” will not still be in the picture. The good roomie moved to LA!!!
keep up the good writing, think you should have a career in journalism!!!
love ya
Unfortunately it is a harsh reality that some in this life are “givers” and other are “takers”. Too bad you are now the minority in your own household. Luckily for them it “never rains in Southern California” and therefore they will be able to spend plenty of time outside when you eventually – rid your house of the pests!!
